Highway 413 is part of Ontario’s plan to expand highways and public transit across the Greater Golden Horseshoe to fight congestion, create jobs and prepare for the massive population growth expected in the next 30 years.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\tFighting Congestion\n\t\t\t\t

The Greater Golden Horseshoe is one of the fastest-growing regions in North America<\/a>.<\/strong> It is expected to attract 1 million new people every five years, reaching nearly 15 million by 2051. That’s a population increase of more than 50 per cent compared to today. And as the region continues to be Canada’s economic engine, the number of trucks on the road is expected to double by 2051.<\/p>\n

Congestion already costs the Greater Toronto Area\u00a0 $11 billion per year in lost productivity, adds to the costs of goods and creates carbon emissions. \u00a0Ontario needs new infrastructure to help move people and goods or the region will quickly become overwhelmed.<\/p>\n

A new 400-series highway and transitway would significantly reduce travel times for drivers in York, Peel and Halton Regions. Projections show that by 2031, more than 300,000 trips would be taken on the highway every day. And someone travelling the full length of the route would save 30 minutes compared to the time it would take via Highways 401 and 400.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The adjacent transitway would make public transit a realistic and appealing option in many communities that are currently underserved. Combined with Ontario’s other transit investments like the subway expansion plan<\/a>, GO expansion<\/a><\/strong> and the Hazel McCallion LRT<\/a><\/strong>, it will give thousands of people the option to leave their cars at home.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\tEconomic Benefits\n\t\t\t\t

Building infrastructure is a critical part of Ontario’s long-term economic plan<\/a><\/strong>. Highway 413 is expected to generate up to $1 billion<\/strong> in real GDP per year during construction.<\/p>\n

It will also help create opportunities in the skilled trades. Highway 413 alone is expected to support an average of up to 6,000 jobs<\/strong> each year during construction.<\/p>\n

The highway and transitway would also help connect people to major employment centres and attract more businesses to the area, creating and sustaining good local jobs.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\tDesigned for the future\n\t\t\t\t

A new highway and transit corridor could help Ontario promote and adopt new state-of-the-art technologies. For example, the highway could be designed with dedicated areas for electric vehicle charging stations, to help encourage more people to choose cleaner transportation options.<\/p>\n

It could also be built to enable vehicle-to-infrastructure communication, a critical technology for the next wave of automated vehicles. Driving innovation and creating a competitive business environment are central parts of Ontario’s plan for the future of the automotive industry<\/a><\/strong>. The automated and connected vehicle industry is a global market expected to be worth more than $1.3 trillion by 2035. Positioning our province as leader in the industry will ensure that the auto sector continues to grow, thrive and invest right here in Ontario.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\"Close-up\n\t\t

“Highway 413 will only save people 30 seconds.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\t

You may have heard that figure being cited a lot recently. But is it true?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Well actually, Highway 413 would save the people who use it up to 30 minutes each way.<\/p>\n

The 30-second figure is from a study done in 2017 that looked at the average time savings across the entire Greater Golden Horseshoe (GGH). It includes every trip on every road in every region – including places that are nowhere near the proposed Highway 413. So, a trip from Oshawa to Whitby for example, or from Niagara to St. Catharines would be included in that average.<\/p>\n

Of course, on any given day once it’s built, most people in the GGH won’t use the Highway 413. Just like most people today don’t use Highway 401, or Highway 427, or the DVP. Thousands do, but most of us don’t.<\/p>\n

So, will Highway 413 make a significant difference for someone travelling from Hamilton to Niagara Falls? Of course not. But for the people who live, work or travel through the western part of the GTA it would have a huge impact. People who travel the full length of the highway – from Vaughan to Milton – would save up to 30 minutes each way. That’s a life-changing amount of time. It’s the difference between calling home to say goodnight and tucking your kids into bed yourself.<\/p>\n\t

But shouldn’t a project that costs billions benefit everyone? It should and it will, though the benefits may vary. Highway 413 would have huge economic benefits for Ontario, but not everyone will enjoy the direct benefit of time savings.<\/p>\n

Imagine an area that desperately needed a new hospital. Building a new one would provide thousands of people with access to healthcare in their community. Now imagine if we looked at the wait times for every other hospital in the area and found that they would only be reduced by an average of 30 seconds. Would we still build the hospital? Of course we would, because the people who live near it need it.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\"Simplified\n\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\tFor those travelling to or through York, Peel and Halton Regions, the Highway 413 would save up to 30 minutes each way during rush hours. \n\t

It’s the same principle. If we used average regional time savings to decide whether to build highway and transit projects we’d never build any of them. The 404, the QEW, your GO Line – pick any highway or transit line you travel regularly. Now imagine that it didn’t exist. What would your commute be like?<\/p>\n

The GTA needs better infrastructure and this project will deliver that. Our transportation network isn’t about one project – that’s why we call it a network. It’s about connections. It’s about options. To keep up with the GTA’s booming population growth, we need new infrastructure or we’ll face devastating congestion. That’s why Ontario is making record-setting investments in public transit and it’s why we need to move forward with new highway projects like the Highway 413.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
